I have allegeries REALLY bad in Oklahoma. This mask is kind of a big deal. Well, look at it. But is is helping a lot. Wearing it is worth it. It does work and comes with a bunch of little replacement filters. If you are wondering what that string is, it has little ear plugs attached to the ends.

I spent 40 plus years as a research entomologist. During that time I used a wide variety of protective masks. I needed a mask to prevent an allergy response while pruning and cleaning needles out from under Emerald arborvitae. This mask is easy to breath through, comfortable, easy to adjust, easy to clean and very effective. More effecive by far than masks I used for this task in the past.

This mask is way too small. Pay attention to the other reviews. I thought people were exaggerating, they weren't. This fits my 8 year old child's face. The placement of the rivets and what they rivets go through limits the flexibility of the mask itself. If the construction was better the mask would be able to expand wide enough, however it isn't so it doesn't. Buyer beware if you are purchasing for an adult person.

I should preface this review by saying I bought this for walking freely around in air polluted cities of 3rd world countries. Perhaps this wasn't the intended use but I couldn't find a better solution.I was actually looking for a gas mask, not a dusk mask like this, because I was more worried about the toxic exhaust fumes spewing out of these rusty old cars and trucks that fill the streets in the cities of 3rd world countries. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any that's inconspicuous enough so as to not make me look like I'm about to fumigate a house. Although this neoprene mask is hardly inconspicuous-- you'll look like Subzero from Mortal Kombat while wearing it-- at least it's small enough that you can hide it behind a bandana. Bandanas are more commonly used as dust masks so you won't look like a weirdo if you wore one. Not that anyone would notice in 3rd world countries but I'm selfconscious like that.Anyway, on to the mask itself. I have a regular sized head so it fits me fine. You may need to adjust it over your mouth for optimum filtration. It does seem to work although it doesn't perform miracles. With the mask on I smell less of the outside gasses and other pollutants, although I sometimes wonder if it's because the filter is doing its job or the smell of the filter itself is masking the outside odors. I like to think it's the former.The main drawback to this mask is that it does make it more difficult to breathe-- kind of like trying to breathe through a pillow. This may be fine if you're wearing it while riding a motorized bike but if you're walking or doing any kind of strenuous activity while wearing it, you may at first feel like you're choking. Because you'll need to take deeper breaths, I wonder if you'd also be inadvertantly taking pollutants-- those that manage to pass through the filter-- actually deeper into your lungs than normal. If this were the case, this mask could do more harm than good. Another drawback is that moisture does build up inside the mask, especially on a hot day, but so far it's not a big problem.Overall this mask seems fairly effective for use in walking around in air polluted cities. The carbon filter seems to reduce outside odors but not completely eliminate them. Because it allows some but noticeable amount of outside odors/gasses/pollutants in and because it does restrict air flow by a fair amount, I can't recommend this mask too highly. But unless you're willing to wear the bulkier, industrial strength 3M cartridge based gas masks, this is probably your best choice.

I walk to the gym every morning and in the winter the cold air really hurts my lungs, especially after an hour workout. I have found the this worn over a Balaclava does wonders. The air feels like it is around 70 degrees or better. Now it should be noted that although this does warm the air considerably there is a down side that you are breathing a bit harder to get through all the material. Aside from this I highly recommend this item for winter wear.

Works great for sawdust and has an adjustable velcro headband.

Wood dust is so damaging to the lungs I have felt the need to find something other that the throw away dust masks. I do not like the rubber bands cutting in to me or how the masks crumple and smell. It seemed this one would do the job.It did not. The straps are not comfortable for continuous wear and if you have a longer or large face it will not fit.I am now using a 3m silicone mask with dust filters..doing well with it. Pop on the different canisters when painting or working with fumes then back to the dust filters.
