Della Reese -a great collection of her best recordings on 2cds at a bargain price
Few people know Della Reese has a great voice and was very popular in the 1950's. Here you get your money's worth with a 2cd set consisiting of 52 of her recordings, all very good and with excellent fidelity. It is a bargain in the vicinity of $12.00 Only objection is, for some unknown reason, a #1 hit," Don't You Know" is absent from this Jubilee collection.

A gem!
I remember seeing Della during the 60s, here in Boston, when she was riding high as a vocalist. I loved her then and I love her now. It's too bad that we all have to grow old. I would give anything to see what she could do with some of our current hits.

the best Della Reese cd
In my opinion Reese's best material was in the 50's. In this cd her voice was at its greatest. There are several memorable sing-a-long like tunes. My family, who are impartial to my old music taste, even like this one.Della does a fantastic version of "I cried for you", even beating Lady Day's take, and saying that is not easy. Also look for "When I grow too old to dream", which is a cute duet and the passionately sung "I've got my love to keep me warm."

Love it!
I've always been a fan of Della Reese's, ever since her "Don't You Know" days, and especially when she started her acting career, so I love this set. As always, her enunciation is spot on and that husky, soulful voice is fabulous! I recommend it.

Another terrible Della Reese cd, the arrangements are atrocious.
This is one of the worst recordings I've ever bought. I think Della Reese's original recordings of Don't You Know and, And That Reminds Me are terrific but they aren't the versions heard on my two recent Della Reese cd purchases. The arrangements of all songs are absolutely terrible. I highly recommend you steer clear of these cd's!

NOT AN ALBUM TO GIVE YOU A MUSICAL BUZZ !!
According to the sleeve notes on this 2 CD set, most of these early Jubilee tracks by Della Reese (Dellareese Early), failed to make any impact on the record buying public, and quite honestly, I'm not at all surprised! Her brash, non sentimental, bluesy style of singing of the well known songs in this collection vary in musical appeal to me from fair to just truly awful in my opinion. Far better is her later work with RCA (try her Album 'Della' on BMG Camden Label), but even there Della's version of some songs, but not all, lapse into the truly awful again. Singers like Dinah Washington, Ernestine Anderson, Esther Phillips, Dakota Staton, Dianne Reeves and others who sing in a similar style to Della Reese, do a much better job in interpreting classic material in the genre of jazz vocal.

What a Songbird!
I first heard Della Reece in 1959 when I was 14 years old. She was singing "Sermonette" and I thought it was great then although it did not chart. I was into music then and I used to listen the charts on the radio and I still have quite a lot of 78s from that time including Elvis, Bill Haley, Little Richard and the like. The problem was that I as a schoolboy I could not afford to buy everything I liked. I liked the smooth stuff as well as the rock stuff (even opera and the classics). I bought Sarah Vaughan ("Broken Hearted Melody"), Ella Fitzgerald (EP with "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "St Louis Blues" etc). I didn't buy the Della Reece single and over the years I forgot about it until a few weeks ago she appeared in a film on one of the movie channels. My wife was watching the film but I cought Della Reece's name in the credits and I thought Wow! Memories came flooding back and onto Amazon I went and did a search and came up with this double CD.Of course I played "Sermonette" first and sat back and smiled. I then played the rest of the first CD (I haven't played the second CD yet but I will when I have time). There's much to enjoy if you like ladies with lovely smooth voices singing lovely smooth songs. Many of which I have heard many times before by other singers - you know - the old standards. There are songs that I didn't know but they were just as enjoyable as the familiar ones. The sound quality is excellent even though most of disc one is in mono. They are Della's original singles on the Jubilee label. The second disc contains 2 Jubilee albums in stereo. One from 1958 and the other from 1959.I bought this collection on the basis of knowing only one of Della's songs. I was not disappointed with the rest of the tracks on disc one and I am really looking forward to playing disc 2.Amazon has a brilliant selection of oldie CDs and I have browsed many titles which I hope to get in the future as funds allow so If you think of any oldies you enjoyed years ago do a search on Amazon and you may be surprised.
