WOW
That's really the most succinct way of describing the effect of this book. Wow. It's unfathomable what the food and restaurant industries have been doing to the American consumer in recent decades. The tricks, the manipulation, the flat-out false advertising and misleading health claims, and we've been gobbling it up, no questions asked."Eat This, Not That" is a treasure trove of information about what are the healthiest foods to eat, and what to avoid, from restaurants to the supermarket to holidays and parties. The authors aren't afraid to name names when it comes to unhealthy food. They put both restaurant chains and name brands under the microscope, and make suggestions for dozens of food swaps you can easily make to create a healthier you.For example, one restaurant's personal pan pizza has over 2300 calories and almost 5000 mg of sodium, while a similar pizza at another eatery has only 570 calories and 1200 mg sodium. Would you be able to tell the difference and make the right choice? Three fish tacos at one restaurant come in at 2300 calories and 4000 mg of sodium, while the competition's fish tacos clock in under 700 calories and only 900 mg of sodium. That's three times the calories and four times the sodium from restaurant to restaurant! Could you tell the difference between the two? A single slice of stuffed-crust pizza with almost 1000 calories. Coffee drinks with more sugar than two scoops of ice cream. Shakes with more fat than four Big Macs. A popular Chinese food chain's beef dish with over 10,000 mg sodium (no, that's not a typo). This is nuts!Calorie-dense foods, hidden fat, added sugar, and super-sized portions, it's all adding to the expanding American waistline. The authors illustrate how much food has changed in recent decades. We are consuming significantly more calories than we were twenty years ago, and we've been conditioned to eat sweeter foods than in the past, due to all the added sugar in our diet. The average American eats 82 grams of added sugar every single day - empty calories that contribute nothing in the way of nutrition, but sure have the potential to add body fat. And the bad news is not relegated to restaurants alone. We are shown how "super-marketers" devise marketing schemes to trick you into thinking you are eating healthier fare. "Low-fat" often translates into "high in sugar." "Multi-grain" means nothing. Multi-grain bread turns to sugar once ingested just as fast as white bread. You have to look for WHOLE-grain to gain any health benefits. Low-fat peanut butter - loaded with fillers. Turkey bacon - no less fat, but packing more sodium. Non-fat fruit-on-the bottom yogurt - stuffed with sugar. "Healthy" adult cereals with more sugar than the kids' cereals. Would you recognize these misleading claims? From fat-laden shakes to sugary pasta sauces, authors David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding are attempting to change the way America eats, one food at a time, and judging by the response in several restaurants, they're making some headway. Several eateries have either scaled down or eliminated many items on their menus since the first "Eat This, Not That" publication. Education is the first step to making improvements. Read the book to find out who the worst offenders are. Turn yourself into an educated consumer, and begin making your own healthier food swaps today!

Great book & teaching guide. Will not dissappoint!
I had been searching for a quick reference book to aid me with making healthy choices when eating. This book was very helpful, easy to use & I highly recommend it.This book breaks things down into categories that make it easy when making choices in a particular food category. This enables you, over time, to learn the difference about food choices & creates a lifestyle change. Don't think of this as a "diet" book, but rather a learning tool.I have loaned my book out various times & helped many friends learn how to make healthier choices. As a result, many have purchased this book & also it became a domino effect lol.Love this book & still use it as a refresher often. Will be looking to see if an updated version has been published.

Yes to Eat This Not That!!
This book isn't a diet plan it is a life plan. I have lost over 10 lbs since purchasing this book in the middle of summer and making some of the simple switches. Combining it with the Eat This Not That Shopping guide has yielded great results that aren't based on deprivation but reality! I will never be able to just eat a chicken breast and drink a glass of water all the time and be happy (or full), but this line of books is great for making some pretty simple switches and still eating food I like and not gaining extra unnecessary pounds. And these switches are just becoming part of my routine so I won't ever want/need to switch back. The reason I only gave it four stars is simply because many of the restaurants in the book are not available in my area so they are not that useful. I think a wider variety of restaurants, especially information from the newer, slower fast food places, that are really popular and seem healthy but I know aren't. I want to know what to eat at those places too!Otherwise I love these books!

Informative and motivating!
When I first began to read the ETNT books, I was a little skeptical, feeling that some of the choice selections were included for their shock value only. I also wasn't sure about the verity of all of the claims. However, I purchased this book for my niece who has been asking me for guidelines for eating healthy. I was caught by the title: The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution. I firmly believe in this method, and am careful to read labels and order healthier options when eating out. I thought that if I liked the approach of this book it would be a big help to my niece. Well, I liked it so much that although I have had it for a month I still haven't sent it to her! (I told her about it and she is happy to wait while I savor the contents.)It is organized into 7 informative chapters: The Truth about Your Food; Foods That Cure; At Your Favorite Restaurants; At the Supermarket; Holidays and Special Occasions; For Kids; and On a Budget. The Index allows you to quickly find topics of most interest to you.The most helpful parts of the book for me (and ultimately, my niece) are The Truth about Your Food, Foods That Cure, and On a Budget chapters. Included in this info is the ETNT Encyclopedia which discusses food industry labeling, and misleading advertising by restaurants and packaged goods manufacturers. Foods That Cure is a well researched, well concise guide to healthy eating, including Cutting Your Carbohydrate Footprint, and 10 Foods for a Longer, Healthier Life. This is the info my niece had requested, and this is a concise and thorough list.My niece will find Chapter 6: For Kids, very helpful, including nutrition advice and a rundown of how popular restaurants fare in providing the best nutrition for your child. But, absolutely the best part for me - and the reason my niece doesn't have the book yet - is the section that provides recipes for 10 dishes that cut calories and save cash (in the On a Budget chapter). You'll love the suggestions, and maybe, you, like me, will just decide to buy another book for your loved one so that you can both benefit from this awesome little book!

Eat this, not that
This is an excellent book. Well worth the money. It will help me choose meals with WAY less fat and calories. Would really like to have more Canadian restaurants though.

Too American
Saw this on the Biggest Loser USA and it sounded good and it is if you're in the US! ;-)They have good ideas like having an egg McMuffin at McDonald's... would love to but it's not on the UK menu (maybe you can get it if you ask for it though).Sadly most of the restaurants reviewed aren't in the UK.

Great book
You may be surprised at the calories some foods contain. This book has lots of good information to help you cut down on calorie intake. Some of the recommended choices are not necessarily healthy choices, rather the focus is on less calories.
