The now internationally recognized symbol for peace was designed in 1958 by artist and designer Gerald Holtom during the British nuclear disarmament movement. Holtom used the flag semaphore alphabet (like those used by air traffic controllers) to spell out the letters "N" and "D" for "nuclear disarmament", which is now known as the Peace symbol. The design was non-patented or restricted and by 1960 it had started to be imported to the US for general Peace movements here, beginning its legacy of an international peace symbol.
