Long Shot (Comeback Kids)

The sentences are too long and complicated, with too many dependent clauses. Challenging prose.
Lupica knows sports and he knows how tell an entertaining story. However, my son was challenged by the writing, with good reason. Many sentences are a mix of multiple dependent and independent clauses.Even I was confused at times and had to re-read some sentences to accurately determine their meaning.Lupica doesn't know how to write for kids. Look instead for writers who use mostly simple, declarative sentences. That's the best way to help kids learn to love reading. And its good advice for all writers β not just the authors of children's books.

Confident
This book is about confidence and standing up for what you believe in and what that person does to believe. in this book a kid named Pedro Morales runs for class president and he loves the sport of basketball. Basketball was his life long dream. His dad understood but wanted Pedro to play soccer. Pedro said soccer was ok but he continued to play basketball. People wanted to vote for someone who could get free ice cream and no homework. But Pedro did not want that.

My 9 year old enjoys this series
He's an athlete and he enjoys reading. I thought this might be a little too advanced for him but it's right on the mark. His favorite was the Comeback Kids that focused on football. He thought that was the best out of the bunch, but liked this one very much too and would recommend it to any boy who enjoys playing sports and loves sports movies geared toward kids.

Another hit for my sporty 5th grader
My 11-year-old eats up Mike Lupica sports fiction for kids. If your child likes this one, I highly recommend getting them the series. This one did not disappoint!

For the boy who "hates reading"
Teachers, tutor and I had tried everything we could think of to get my 10 year old to "like" reading. Nothing was working. Even if he would read it, he wasn't doing well with reporting back what he read (comprehension). This is the only series that has captured his attention. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.
