This shirt from the WarbirdShirts collection features the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. The development of the Starfighter began in 1951, as Lockheed Skunk Works sought to produce a minimally designed fighter to overcome the difficulties experienced with the complex F-86 Sabre in the Korean War. The Starfighter was introduced in the United States Air Force in 1958, and saw action over Vietnam, where they performed ground-attack sorties but no air-to-air kills. The USAF retired the aircraft in 1969, but the Starfighter was exported to over a dozen foreign nations (many of whose leaders had taken bribes from Lockheed to do so). The last foreign operator, Italy, retired the Starfighter in 2004. Over 2500 Starfighters were built in total.
