Expected much better
For being such a long time and well respected sports writer , Freedman doesn't measure up to his reputation on this one. It was an "OK" read and then I got to the bio of Randall Tex Cobb . He describes what was a great heavyweight fight between Cobb and Ken Norton (the split decision going to Norton) , as "still one of the greatest miscarriages of boxing justice I've ever seen "! Excuse me ?! Professional boxing is subjective where scoring is concerned, but if Freedman thinks that decision was one of the worst of all time, then he needs to stop trying to judge fights , period ! I've viewed that entire fight several times , and anyone that knows how to score a boxing match would see that fight as going either way,, no matter how many times they saw it ! Lost respect for the author 's writing authority with the sport after that. And anyway, like I earlier stated, the books just an "OK" read anyway ........

Took me back to a great time
If you grew up watching boxing in the late 70s and early 80s in the Philly area, this book will take you back nicely to that Golden Era. Great tales of Matthew Saad Muhumaad, Dwight (Braxton) Qawi, Jeff Chandler, Bennie Briscoe and many more make this a great read. I felt like I was watching NBC on Saturday afternoon all over again in 1981 as a 12 year old. Very enjoyable.

A trip down memory lane
The book takes you to a time when Philly fighters were revered and feared. The shows were high quality and 50/50 contests and produced great fighters. The book gives you the thrills and spills of the fighters careers but also what they did after there career. If you, like me were around at the time of the Philly golden era or heard about it then this book will bring back golden memories or educate you on that golden era, a must for boxing lovers.

Philadelphia Fighters
A good read for the most part with solid chapters on J Russell Peltz, and some of Philly's top fighters, but goes overboard in his description of the Norton v Cobb fight which I believed was won by Norton.
