Romantics and Classics: Style in the English Country House

I confess, I normally just flip through the pictures of most of my interior design and architecture books, but this book was worth reading through the text as well. It offered a brief history of each of the featured houses as well as a little bit about the current owners as well. My hands down favorite house for both interiors and exterior was definitely Lake House in Wiltshire. This is the quintessential romantic English country house. My favorite formal gardens were those of Pitshill in Sussex. This was a lovely book with excellent photography that I highly recommend to all lovers of the English Country House style. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

This is a beautifully produced book that takes you on a journey through a series of English country houses, many of them unknown to me, illuminated by Jeremy Musson's scholarly but extremely readable text and stunning photographs by Hugo Rittson Thomas. A book to grace any coffee table - but actually much more than that: a fascinating overview of cultural history, architecture and interior design.
