Measures up in its class. A very good bread knife. Great fit and finish.
I have knives from many high end makers including Henckel, Wuestoff, Messermeister, Tojiro and others. For value, quality materials, and fit and finish, the Japanese and Japanese style knives seem to be the best choices for my needs these days. All of my knives were purchased at retail prices, so this review is not based on a reviewer program.I needed a good bread knife and found some new brands being offered. Research indicated the Dalstrong Shogun Bread knife would be a good fit. The knife came in the box and with accompanying items mentioned in many reviews. The blade had a notable amount of black polishing rouge on it, but it wiped off easily. Three of the serrations had a slightly rough edge, that is they twinkle. I am confident these will correct with a small effort using a steel or water stone. There were a couple of very small scuffs that may be an issue for some, but I bought it to cut bread and not for display. Despite these tiny "flaws" the over all fit and finish of the knife is excellent. The extra labor used to polish it helps the knife stand out in appearance over my more satin finished Tojiro blades. The fit of the handle to the full tang blade is especially well edecuted. That the back of the blade has had edges softened is a plus. Several Japanese made knife brands in this class are known for sharp backs/corners that need sanded or honed down between bolster and tip. I did test the knife on some quite stale french bread. In comparison this Dalstrong Shogun did indeed cut better than other knives I tried including a competing brand bread knife. It required much less pressure, and cut cleaner leaving far fewer crumbs. I will update after I use it to cut stone ground rye baked with wood coals. My favorite feature of the knife is the angle of the bolster where it meets the blade. I also like that its not a full bolster that will prevent full sharpening strokes, and change shape of blade with time. This bread knife did not travel to one side or cut in an arc as many do. I am left handed and many bread and serrated knifes are miserable to use due to being so assemetrically ground on the "wrong" side. That the knife blade is 10+ inches long is important if you slice artisan and or old world style breads. Many are concerned with the location of manufacture. This knife is made in a Chinese factory using Japanese steel products found in many other high end knives. The Chinsese have factories that make everything from junk to world class goods depending on market demand. Japanese style, and Japanese and European hybrid knifes made with the finest stainless steels are in demand and Chinese factories are fulfilling that demand. The Dalstrong is an example of high end at a reasonable price. I have other knives in ths same class, / price range and this competes well. VG10 stainless is used in the core and the 30 plus layers on each side are a more forgiving type of stainless. VG10 alone would be a somewhat brittle blade that would be less stain resistant. This harder core with softer layers is a win win. Compared to the stainless used in Henckel ProS, and many similar European knifes, this knife will require sharpening far less often, but may require a bit more effort to sharpen when needed. Being that it is serrated, so nicely, I dont anticipate sharpening for a long time.

Last set of knives I will ever have to own!!!
I ended up completely replacing my German made Henckel knives, I had been using for over 30 years. I was tired of having to hit them with steel every time I used them plus the monthly sharpening. I have been extremely happy with these Dalstrong knives so far, after two months of daily use, I have yet to have to sharpen them, and they are still sharp enough to shave with. I did purchase an extra Paring knife, just to practice sharpening. I would recommend that anyone interested in these make certain to view youtube on how to properly sharpen Japanese knives, sharpening is a time consuming proposition that turns into a labor of love. They are a handsome set of knives that really catch the eye and draw your attention to them. The handles fit my hands perfectly and the balance is great. They are a solid well built piece of hardware, that I am sure will last the rest of my lifetime, as well as the next generations to inherit them. I would agree that the some of the extra items shipped with these knives is overkill and the lapel pins are just cheap junk that found the trash. The plastic sheath is very nice and as sharp as these knives are is almost a necessity for personal safety.

Don't use as much as the others, but a must have and excellent model.
As most of the reviews indicate for the Dalstrong Shogun Series knives, they are excellent. I'm a simple home user who needed to replace an odd assortment of knives, and after buying one Dalstrong during a "daily deals" promotion, was hooked on the quality, design and feel of these knives. My other half uses them more often, and she has compared them to cutting things in the past, and amazed at what a quality knife does. To date, I have purchased 10 of the Shogun series, with others on my wishlist. If you're not drawn to the beautiful design of the Shogun series (like I was), their Gladiator series are reviewed just as well, as far as I can see, with substantially lower prices. For what I've paid for the 10 Shogun blades, I probably could have owned all of the Gladiator series already, so find what fits your needs and preference, and definitely sign up for Dalstrong's VIP Program from their website (FREE) for some exclusive promotions (through Amazon). We honestly haven't used the bread knife that often (maybe once or twice), since I got it at the beginning of August. We had an old bread knife which worked, but I definitely wanted to replace it with a series model, and obviously (like the others), the cut and design are top notch. Definitely a fine addition of a staple blade, which some may use more often than others, which I highly recommend.

I watched her one evenning slicing crusty bread with some difficulty so decided to replace this knife with a better and sharper one
I bought this bread knife to replace a very old knife that I gave to my daughter. I watched her one evenning slicing crusty bread with some difficulty so decided to replace this knife with a better and sharper one. So I went about reviewing bread knife reviews and read customer evaluations. The Dahlstrong knife was one of the hgher graded knives especially for the very crusty type of breads. So my son in law and daughter have had the opportunity to use the knife for crusty breads as well as softer breads. They loved it and commented on the hefty feel and impressive cutting capability. I have personally tried this knife on bread and am similarly impressed. The knife blade is wide and the length of 10.5" with its heftmake slicing effortless. I have a Ken Onion ~10" Shun knife with similar specs but a bit wider and with a taller offset handle, I love this knife too but feel there is little difference in cutting and feel. Of course the Shun's price of almost three fold higher is only justified by my love of good knives andof a limited production Ken Onion design.

Awesome
I still use it professionally . The humpback style works great for cutting bread and whatever else you need. The angle makes it so much better. Handle could be better.

This is the first bread knife I’ve used that doesn’t tear fresh bread as it cuts. Works really well. Highly recommend Dalstrong products

Very sharp and cuts bread perfectly with no pulling or tearing.
This is my sixth dalstrong knife, i know they’re made in china etc but they really are top quality and remain very sharp for a long time with normal use (always use a chopping board that’s either wood or strong plastic, marble or glass or granite are too hard to be pressing expensive knives onto) wash and dry them as soon after use as possible these are not your run of the mill cheap stainless steel knives 🔪 being Damascus steel they can rust if left to dry on the draining board, you paid a lot for them look after them!! I will carry on collecting them until i have the full set of my old knives replaced because i love how they look and feel in the hand too and they really do the job well.
