A Piece of Art (and a good story too)
Of course the story is the old tale about the poor shoemaker and his wife who have only one piece of leather left to make a pair of outstanding shoes (that would probably sell at Nordstroms today), The shoemaker and his wife go to bed so tired after cutting out the pattern and plan to sew the shoes the next day. But that night two little elves appear and sew the shoes and do a great job too! I am so glad they were not deported the next morning. Anyway, so starts the nightly pattern which results in success for all. Still a great story after so many years. The only thing that surpasses the story is Jerry Pinkney's art. Just look at the detail on the cover. This artist uses many mediums to illustrate. Pinkney is not conserving time here or in any of the books he illustrates for children. His art is like a lasso, capturing the attention of children, making them want to see the next page, and finally becoming curious about the story, i.e., reading!

Lovely version of a classic story.
This version of the story is perfect for pre-schoolers. Just the right length to hold their interest. The jewel of this book is the artwork. This is one of the most beautifully illustrated children's book we own. Kids love the joy filled illustrations and so do I.

Beautiful Adaptation
I just love the illustrations. I had a pocket version of the story when I was younger that has since fallen apart. This was a lovely find. I showed it to my mom, who keeps my toddler niece and nephew, and she loved the imagery as well. Highly recommended if only for the pictures:)

We got a copy with the audio CD (which I highly Recommend! ) from the Library
My Son loves this book! We got a copy with the audio CD (which I highly Recommend!) from the Library. We have read it about 20 times BEFORE we bought the copy ourselves. Wonderfully illustrated, and my wife and I think that the elves are the Children or Grandchildren of the illustrator, just with the way they are drawn. Wonderful book!

Beautiful illustrations and excellent version of this classic tale
Beautiful illustrations and excellent version of this classic tale! I do monthly story time, in the library where I work, for elementary and charter schools in our area. I used this for K--2nd grade and it was really enjoyed by the students and teachers. (The book arrived quickly which was great since I needed it in time for my presentation.)

O I like this book
O I like this book! The pictures are so fantastic. I love just looking at them, never mind the cute story of a couple who has a few little helpers building shoes in their shop at night.

Such a classic
Although my youngest loves this story, it never ceases to amaze me in this digital age how much he prefers the paper version! So I have now got the paper version too! Love the supporting illustrations in this book...
