Factory Physics

Hopp/Spearman have built and improved an essential guide to the fundamental principles of operations analysis. After years of hearing Factory Physics praised by my Industrial Engineering colleagues, I finally got it. As a practitioner and teacher I cannot overstate that this is essential knowledge of the dynamics of operating systems. Most of us don't get what's going on in our operations. Hopp & Spearman not only explain it, they provide the equations! I also greatly appreciate the historical perspective provided in Part I. Having lived operations through this time period, not only is it quite accurate, but also I find this perspective to be particularly helpful for new learners. Part II does well to explain what is really going on in operating systems and, for math nerds, lays out all the equations. Hopp/Spearman do well to provide simple systems to demonstrate these calculations, and refer back to these examples to reinforce principles later in the text. Part III adds more detailed guidance of applications of the principles in today's operating environment. All of this is presented in a pleasant writing style that is easy to read. This wisdom appears somewhat unique in the discipline and provides insights into understanding our complex operating environments that is seldom seen in other sources.

Must read for everybody interested in the natural behavior of production and supply chain systems. The theoretical explanations are not overwhelming. There is plenty of examples, questions and exercises which help to better understand problems. Good to know is that there is separate book containing the exercises answers, which can help to understand harder problems. I will certainly come back to this book from time to time.

Very good and helpful book to have as reference and guidance.No easy and superfast to read, though; one can get stuck into pages when starting to think applying things to the real life.But it tells a story if one gets lost in thought with this book, doesn't it?

I have not applied the total conceps from this excellent book. I just have used the elemental ones and I obtained great results in Inventory reductions. If you really want to improve your business it is a good idea to start at the begining... start with the basics with Factory Physics. You do not need to learn sofisticated techniques or expensive tools, you just need to take the original tools and develop them in order to improve your processes. This is the essential matter of this book.

I bought the book and new and it came in great, bought the book for class

This is my first time using kindle and I didn't have a good experience using it for a textbook. Compared to Adobe, Kindle had a worst image resolution. It also doesn't allow you to open it and highlight in more than 2 devices. I did like it's control F feature because it showed a snip of where the keyword I was searching was used and what page. It also allows you to export all your notes and highlights, I didn't use the feature but thought it was cool.

Anybody involved in the manufacturing industry, it is a great book to read.It was mentioned that the book is in good condition but to by dismay, it wasn't. IT was hardcover with shaky binding. I am displeased from the seller of this book.

Possibly the worst textbook I've owned (at least for taking a class). The problems require information from chapters not yet covered. E.g chapter 8 problems require concepts from chapter 9. The organization of concepts does not make sense, and the in text examples are generally unhelpful.

This is a definitive work...

One of the best books that explains the science and dynamics of 'In-Plant flows' and more so well. A great piece of work by the authors and is an asset for the Supply Chain enthusiast for life-long reference.
