The gimmick was loose
The gimmick in the short piece was loose - it just came straight out. So I had to buy super glue to glue the gimmick in... only to find I had glued the gimmick in with the wrong polarity. My fault entirely, but if the gimmick wasn't loose in the first place, then...So now I had to remove the nib from the main section and whack the gimmick out of THAT part, turn it around and super-glue it back, so that the polarity was correct. Finally, reassembled, the pen now works. Save your money and buy a better made pen. This is cheap-looking and comes with a loose gimmick - caveat emptor.
