The perfect book to read with teens!
I read this book every single year with my 8th graders. It is relatable, touching, beautifully written and contains a very important message about how if we all take off our masks and reveal our true selves, there will be no judgement because we are all in this together. When we are all willing to be vulnerable, growth and beauty will transpire.

Banned book so I was curious
If you are trying to understand better how teens think and what matters to them, especially thinking that a majority of these young adults are being exposed to things my generation was not, it is a reality gut punch. The poetry/open mic parts show that out teens are at least able to verbalize feelings. Was not what I expected and I could scarcely relate to it, but I am glad I read it as a grandma of a 16 year old who struggles quietly.

Homework
I ordered this book because my Granddaughter needed to read it for school. It is well written. The book is about inner city kids that are asked by their teacher to start writing poems. These poems are written in conjunction with what is going on in their lives. I would recommend any teenager to read this book.

Amazing!
I had to read this book for a college class, and normally required books for school are pretty lame to me, but this was a really good read. Each chapter is told from a different student’s point of view, and you get to see them for who they really are, and how poetry was able to bring the students closer together despite all of their cultural and behavioral differences.

Summer reading assignment
Purchased this for my son's summer reading assignment from the list of books that he had to choose from. Although I have not yet read this book myself, my 14 year old son was none too thrilled. He reads much more than your average 14yr. old boy, and very much enjoys reading over all. His feedback to me on this book was that it didn't hold his interest and that he didn't care much for the story line. This book has wonderful reviews in other instances, but from the perspective of my son, he wished that he would have made another choice for his summer reading assignment. I wouldn't give this a negative review; after all, maybe if he had decided that he wanted to read the book, instead of being told that he had to read his opinion may have been all-together different...
