The Best Badger State Dayhiking
Wisconsin is not known for its hiking, but it offers a fabulous state park system and a wide variety of terrain, most of which was influenced by the most recent ice age. This guide features the best hiking destinations across the entire state.Contrary to the book’s title, this guide describes 60 (not 50) hikes in Wisconsin. All of the state’s major hiking destinations are featured, including 5 hikes in Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, 6 hikes in Kettle Moraine State Forest, at least 8 hikes on the Ice Age Trail, and about half of Wisconsin’s state parks. Some lesser-known county parks and privately-owned nature preserves are also featured. Although some hikes have a backpack option, all hikes in this guide are dayhikes, and the average length is 3-4 miles. Overall, the hike selection is excellent. Each hike features a nice trail map imposed on a USGS topo map, some well-informed background information on the park, and some summary information about the hike. A few of the trail descriptions are rather short and terse, but most of them are well-written. More problematic are the factual errors, which come up more often than you would expect in a published hiking guide. For example, the hike at Roche-a-Cri State Park is listed as 4.5 miles long, but from experience I know it is less than 3 miles long. For the factual errors, I docked the guide a star.Overall, I enjoyed reading and using this guide, and it is the best Wisconsin hiking guide available on the market. If you plan on doing some dayhiking in Wisconsin, this guide should find a place in your library.

A nice resource for WI hiking
This is well-organized and seems (at least so far) to be easily followed directions for these hikes. I am hoping to eventually try them all. I've already tried a couple and I'm a fan of this book. The info was accurate, and reading ahead I knew whether to take companions with some mobility issues along or if the trail would be too challenging for them. This is a great resource. I keep it in my car in case I am near one of the hikes and have some spare time.

Very Informative and Well Written
Really great book, gives a great understanding on the trails and separates by region. Word to the wise, if you're travelling with a pet or plan on camping or bringing a bike, always double check...even though this guide gives you information regarding what to expect or what is allowed, rules change.

Easy to use, great information
Just moved to the state and needed a good hiking reference. I love how it's organized by area and includes many important details about things one should know before hiking there. Much better than others like it I have looked at!
