See how it all started
The media could not be loaded. This is the first of a three-volume series that looks at the art of Herge, creator of Tintin, whose real name is Georges Remi. The first volume covers from 1907 (when Herge was born) to 1937. Herge only started drawing seriously when he was 15. Tintin was created in 1929 so there are a lot of art that's not Tintin-related in the book. This book includes his sketches, illustrations, commissioned advertising work and of course his comic panels among many other creations. The comics are lifted by bits so there are no complete stories featured, and they are not in English. Reproduction is great, for some of the scanned pieces, you can even see correction done with whiteout. It's interesting to see how his art has evolved throughout the years. It's also fun to see how he draws exotic destinations and people who live there, especially when it comes to researching for Tintin. The text is on Herge's life interspersed with Tintin's adventures across the globe. If it's meant to be a biography, it doesn't seem comprehensive. Putting Tintin's adventures beside the biography at times makes it hard to follow where the previous story left off from. That's a strange way to write a biography as well.Overall, I would recommend this book strictly to fans of Herge and Tintin.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Great resource for graphic novelists.
Herge (George Remi) was creator of the comic strip character, Tin-Tin. Herge became a Belgian national hero and Tin-Tin became a beloved figure to millions of European children throughout the 20th Century. Volume 1 of a three volume series, chronicles Remi's early years as he perfected his art. This volume is profusely filled with Remi's work, and author Phillippe Goddin's accompanying text adds to and is not intrusive of the main attraction which is the art. A great addition for any serious graphic artist or novelist who needs encouragement or influence on his or her work. By all means get this volume.

bliss
If you're a Tintin fanatic, this is like your biggest fix...full of beautiful facsimile reproductions and lots of info about the art, which is what I bought it for. Not much in the way of biog - at least, pretty bland...but as I say you can't beat it for the art content. A perfect companion to a good biog that might have fewer illustrations! I'll be getting the next volume when it comes out, for sure. A collector's volume.

Wonderful collection
Whilst this collection contains many works of Herge art that I had seen before it is nonetheless a beautifully produced book and I can't wait for volume two later in 2010.
